I just looked at the title of this thread again…”Pattern management”. Oh, well that’s a whole different story…my patterns are not well managed!

These are the ones that don’t fit in my files (so they are the more recent acquisitions!). I bought a new file thingie, but haven’t gotten them in there yet because they all will have to be “reorganized.” The “Girl” patterns will go in the new file cabinet since I have mainly girl patterns. They are actually categorized “Accessories” “Baby” “Boy” “Girl” “Ladies” etc. Then they are in order numerically. I put CC in front of the Children’s Corner pattern number, S in front of the Simplicity Pattern number etc so all they are grouped by manufacturer. The McCalls patterns go in with the top of the envelope to the left (I think), and the Simplicity the other way because that way you can read the number while they are still filed. And all of this corresponds to my database.

Then when I want to do a project, I just pretty much pull them all out and scatter them all over the floor, around the house, and wade through them until I find one I want to make!

Getting this mess up is on my To Do List! But there are quite a few more important things that I have to do or I will find myself suddenly single.

Oh my Linda, that is the same way I find a pattern to use. It doesn’t take me very long as I don’t have near the supply you do. I like those white storage stackable storage bins you are using, very nice.

Oh dear Linda…you have a serious addiction, I can tell. Is there a 12 step program for this affliction??? I sure hope not!!!

Jerry, thanks for the ebay link…I’m going to follow up on it right now.

Well I’ve started managing my patterns…………I got 2 into zip locks today……..Of course I piled 6 more on the table and I’ve still have about 15 more stuffed in the drawer with fabric. Now I have to get something to put the plastic bags in. Hmmm… I think this is going to take me longer than I thought.

I just finished updating mine. Once you have a system going, it only takes a little bit of time to maintain it. Of course, my DH accuses me of being pretty “anal”, so maybe I’m overly organized (he says, “Get real; they’re only patterns!”)

Now that I publicly embarrassed myself…I managed my patterns! They are all stored neatly in their new homes! Christmas trees aren’t down, but the patterns are put away!

I keep all my patterns in their oringal envelopes. Some of the heirloom patterns are in envelopes that are large enough to hold my traced ones too. I have most of them, that I use regularly, in one of those plastic things with drawers, under my cutting table. The ones i don’t use much, I keep in a chest of drawers in the closet. Holt’s patterns now are in a canvas bin, by themselves, for easy access. One thing i started doing when I sewed on ebay so much, becasue I would design my outfit first and then find the pattern pieces I need, was to trace off my favorite pieces, that is , an aline jumper, basic yoke, sleeve, long pant, capri pant, sun dress top, jon-jon , boy’s short pants, etc. Then I would put these each in a file folder, labeled with the piece, and keep the folders in a bin. I have two of these. so when I got ready to sew, I would pull out the bin and take out whichever pieces I need to cut out the outfit. So, I would have a folder marked “Pants 12m-4T”, etc. This helped me to sew fast and get a lot done. I also keep a list of measurements for things that I don’t use a pattern for, such as a twirly skirt, so at a glance, I can see what size to cut each strip of fabric, for a particular size.

You Ladies are way too organized for me! Or maybe I just don’t have enough patterns, YET!! I have mine in baskets on shelves. One for Isa and Frannie, one for DD’s, one for me and one for not clothes. Easy!! I trace the ones I have to and it all seems to fit back in the envelope. I must be a good folder!! The others I just cut the size I need and back it goes.

If I am using a pattern a lot, like my pants or pocketbooks, I will glue with glue stick the pattern tissue to oaktag, aka manila folders, and then cut it out with the rotary cutter. I tried the Nancy Zieman folding thing with the number outside and that lasted about 20 seconds. I am pretty good at folding them neatly and getting them back in the envelope but to fold them with the number on top, fuhgetabotit!

Mine are fairly well managed. Neatly, if I do say so myself. Well, at least I can find them……..doesn’t that count as neat!Anyway, I have 3 DGDs that I mainly sew for. They are one size apart (twins are size 5-6 and other DGD is a size 4). Man do I wish I would have saved all the patterns that I used for my daughter 30+ years ago. Now those would be vintage patterns. Anyway, with the size difference being only 1 size a lot of times I just adjust as I’m cutting. But when the patterns are 99cents each I buy 2!

Oh well, I’m VERY organized. Yea, right!
