Hello, I’m a newbie here, but I’ve had alot of experience sewing. I want to make a bedspread, but I wonder if it would be too expensive. Cal King bedspreads are hard to find! Also, what kind of fabric should I look for? Thanks,

Carolann

I’ve made a couple of bedspreads, but never a Cal King. Basicly, you are going to have three ‘panels’ One that rund down the center of the bed, the other two are sewn on either side of the center panel. I always put it on the bed, tuck it under pillows the way I like it and then measure for a hem! Quilted fabric is nice, but you could always buy unquilted fabric, muslin and batting and quilt around the motifs on your fabric. The trims are what make any kind of home decorating expensive. But they are also what makes them unique and yours. Not fond of making dust ruffles… now that’s alot of work… especially when you also make a crinolin to go under the ruffle. Bed skirts are not as hard because they are fitted or pleated… not a lot of gathering involved.

I think the biggest problem you will run into is just the sheer bulk of it all. If it will be quilted or even stitched, think about all of that going to the right of your needle and thru the machine. The weight of it all could pull your needle out of wack and them more problems. I have run into this lately sewing bulky bags. Have you found the perfect fabric and can only get the bedspread you want by making it yourself? If not you may want to look into having it made custom. Workrooms have machines that are large and easily can handle this size and bulk. Or how about someone who does longarm quilting? That may be the best solution.

The reason I wanted to make a bedspread is because I thought it would be cheaper and I would have more choices. I’m not in a hurry, so I think I will wait and buy fabric on sale. Thanks for the help,

I made a Californina king bedspread. I made it from a quilted satin type fabric. I layed out the three pieces on the living room floor. Then sewed them together. Went a lot quicker then I thought it would but it was the bulk of it all. Wasn’t bad to do and sure did save alot of money.

I have made three king-size bedspreads (email me if you would like to see a picture of the latest one). The only difference in the Cal-king is the length (6′ x 7′). The only problem with making your own is definitely the bulk. I used a heavy upholstery fabric on the latest one and made my own piping to put all around the edge. I did not line it or anything. Just make sure you have enough table space to hold the weight of the fabric while you sew, or else it will get the needle out of whack. I have seen Cal-king comforters/bedspreads at places like Tuesday Morning, Marshalls, T.J Maxx, Stein Mart, Ross and Burlington Coat Factory. It’s hit or miss. I live in Houston and have seen that size in all of those stores at one time or another. My son has a Cal-king bed and he found a microfiber comforter at Tuesday Morning in Cal-king. You will have a much better selection if you make your own.
