Children's Shorts

Step Six:

Waistband.. If you have a serger serge waist of shorts.. If you don’t you need to press 1/4″ of waist.. Next turn waist down 1″ and press. I usually use 2 pieces of 1/4″ elastic for waist.. you can also use 1 piece of 3/4″ elastic.. for 3/4″ elastic.. stitch down waist closest to the serged or 1/4″ folded edge leaving 1 1/2″ open at back to insert elastic. cut elastic waist measurement + 1″. I usually attatch a safety pin to end of elastic and thread it thru opening.. being carefull to keep other end of elastic outside the casing.. Once elastic is completely thru casing make sure that it’s not twisted.. Overlap ends of elastic and zigzag together.. Then topstitch back opening closed.. for 1/4″ elastic you basically do the same as above except you add another row of stitching 1/2″ from the edge of waist leaving, again the 1 1/2″ opening.. Insert elastic closest to the top of the waist first.. Joining elastic as above.. then close the middle opening.. Insert bottom elastic as above, join, close bottom opening.

Hope this is clear. If you have any questions feel free to post. I try to check the site every day..

Cast on Rose

I have always loved cast on roses, when I purchased Petite Poche, a Wendy Schoen design, I needed to learn to make them. After trial and error, I found what worked, and would like to share that with you.

Everythingsewing/Applique/lesson 1

Another method:

Cut applique and pellonfusible web out together. Center on background, fuse in place, then finish with satin stitch or stich of your choice. Applique edges can also be covered with fabric paint. Cute on kids clothes.

The balloons are a very simple applique, the lessons are going to be more in detail as we go along. If you have never done applique before choose something really simple to get the feel of it.

Everything Sewing/How To/ Sweatshirt Insert

Step One:

I copy my pattern, I place the insert 1/2″ below the armhole, then add 3/8″ for a seam allowance. This way I don’t have to replan with every sweatshirt. Then I make a pattern of the bottom section and add 3/8″ seam allowance.

Everything Sewing/About Me

Sewing has been a big part of my life. I have heard a lot about learning to sew in a Home Ec. class, but I had a wonderful teacher, she lit the fire and I have never looked back. I love all sorts of sewing, but smocking and heirloom sewing are my passion.

I like to challenge myself and learn new stitches, or new ways to do basic sewing. The white bishop, is not only the first bishop I have sewn but was smocked using a method of smocking straight. I did not fan out the fabric and block it before it was smocked, this is a method taught by Maggie Bunch.

I have also done my first picture smocking, smiling Santa’s on my grandson Seth’s sweatshirt.

My new challenge is shadow work embroidery. Some other challenges have been bullion roses, you can see these done around the blue bishop.

Also I am learning cast on roses, I will have a picture of those up soon. Wendy Schoen is offering classes in hand embroidery, you can check out her site at,Wendy Schoen Design, she mails out the class lessons, one every other month. I hope to keep track of my success’s and failures, in hopes, you will be encouraged to pick a project and create something beautiful for someone you love.
