everything sewing/how to/scalloped hem

Step Two: If a gathered skirt is being attached to a yoke or bodice, sew one side seam, right sides together (RST), and start marking at the side seam with the “dot”, continue with full scallops, ending with another “half scallop” plus allowance for the second side seam. (It is easier to hem over a seam at the curve instead of the point). Sometimes you will have to trim off a few inches of skirt width to make

scallops come out even.

If skirt has both side seams sewed, RST measure width and divide by how many scallops you want (8/10/12/etc.) then find a round object and mark to

match your findings.

this application is the use of the zipper foot.

Step Seven:

Sew through elastic has unbraided rows, these are for sewing through.

Cut sport elastic 3-5″ smaller then waist measurments.

Press the top edge of garmet down 1/2″, if you are sewing on straight as the boxers are done, you anchor the elastic on both ends, being careful not to twist.

Then stretch the elastic as you sew.

After drilling a hole in the base to fit the dowel, it should fit snug, or you could glue it, or a screw from underneath into the dowel. Paint it, the craft paint dries in 1 hour (I gave it two coats). You will need to carve a hole for the dowel, a paring knife worked

for me.

everythingsewing/3 plackets

Bishop Placket How To
This is my favorite placket closure. No button holes to make and it is especially nice on a bishop and moves with the wearer. Oh yes it is also quick and easy.

Baby Placket How To
The baby placket is perfect to use when using bulky fabric such as velveteen or corduroy. It is so much easier and neater then the continuous bound placket and reduces bulk.

Continuous Placket How To
This is a very easy placket, and when sewn with batiste it just seems to dissapear. I made it in contrasting fabric to make it easy to see.

Everything Sewing/How To/Ribbon Bow

Supplies: Ribbon Frey Check Glue gun Single prong alligator clips

Needle and thread

Types of Ribbon: There are lots of different kinds of ribbon out there, but primarily grosgrain ribbon makes the best hairbows. If you want something fancier you can use velvet, satin, or sheer and do all right. Wire edged ribbon and some of your really cheap craft ribbons will not work. If it says it’s washable you are probably ok.

Size of Ribbon: The width of your ribbon depends a lot on the size of your bow. For the small infant hairbows, 3/8″ to ½” work best. Toddlers will be 7/8″ or so and the bigger girls 1-1 1/2″. With the 7/8″ ribbon and up you may also need a short length of 3/8 – ½ ” for your center. As a guide about a yard will get your 7/8″ ribbon a bow with 3 loops on each side and tails. I prefer to buy by the spool because you can always go back and mix in other colors and have a completely different bow.

Clips: You can use about any type barrette to attach your bow, but for younger girls’ very fine hair, regular barrettes will not stay in. I’ve had my best luck putting their hair up using clear plastic rubber bands and then clipping the bow in with single prong alligator clips. You can find these at your local beauty supply store. They are less than $5 for like 100.

Everything Sewing/How To/Mitered Edge

How To Make a Mitered Edge

Insertion lace is flat and meant to be sewn on both sides, as is the lace I used. This lace would not work in real life, but thought it ok for a how to. Edging lace has one flat side and the other side is scalloped. The main point here is how to miter the corner so I hope its ok.
