Each pattern is designed for a specific weight fabric. Many patterns meant for smocking recommend using light weight fabric.

If your pattern
suggests a light weight fabric but you want to use a heavier one,you must reduce the fullness.

You can see how each different weight fabric takes up a different amount of fabric.
