Applique Lesson 1
Step One: Back applique fabric with fusible interfacing.
Step Two: After fabric is backed, press on the right side. Make a pattern of the applique designs on the tracing paper, or use "cut out" design.
Step Three: Cut out applique. Center on the background fabric. Pin in place. Center a piece of tear-a-way interfacing, as a stabilizer behind background fabric. Pin in place at each corner. Pin the design to the background and stabilizer. Place pins about 1" apart or use a glue stick. Never sew over pins.
Step Four: Begin stitching on the straight edge of the design. Use zig zag stitch. Position applique so that the right hand swing of the needle stitches just into the background fabric. Trim away stabilizer. Press on front and back.

Another method:
The balloons are a very simple applique, the lessons are going to be more in detail as we go along. If you have never done applique before choose something really simple to get the feel of it.
